Lviv Considers Installing Fortescue Energy Storage Systems for Critical Infrastructure
30 Oct 2026

Lviv has discussed with the Australian company Fortescue the possibility of deploying modular battery energy storage systems (BESS) to provide backup power for the city’s critical infrastructure. The systems could potentially be used at boiler houses, pumping stations, water supply facilities, hospitals and schools.

The meeting was attended by First Deputy Mayor Andrii Moskalenko; Oksana Pryhoda, Director of the Department of Housing and Infrastructure; Dmytro Petsii, Deputy Director of the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure; and representatives of municipal enterprises and the Australian company.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) make it possible to store electricity and use it to power facilities during power outages. For Lviv, such solutions could become one of the tools for decentralising the energy system and increasing the autonomy of critical infrastructure.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed on the next steps for exploring a potential partnership:

  • Lviv City Council will identify the facilities most in need of backup power and technically able to connect energy storage systems.
  • Fortescue will provide technical requirements for the equipment and a written outline of possible funding sources.
  • The parties will work out the criteria and parameters of a potential pilot project.

Thus, the next stage of cooperation involves assessing the needs of the city’s infrastructure, its technical capabilities and the financial model for implementing the technology.

Fortescue is an Australian company known for its mining operations and the development of energy technologies. Its areas of work include energy storage and decarbonisation solutions.

For Lviv, cooperation with international technology companies is an opportunity to attract modern energy solutions, diversify power sources and strengthen the resilience of urban infrastructure.
