Lviv City Council expands cooperation with JICA in medicine, rehabilitation, and business development
13 Dec 2024

The Lviv City Council and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have agreed on new areas of cooperation focused on medicine, rehabilitation, and business development. On December 12, a meeting took place between representatives of the Lviv City Council, the head of the JICA Office in Ukraine, Hideki Matsunaga, and JICA medical expert Dr. Dr.ISONO Mitsuo.

The new areas of collaboration include:

  • Experience exchange and training in medicine: In 2025, JICA plans to conduct four series of training sessions for Ukrainian doctors and rehabilitation specialists focusing on spinal cord injuries and the prevention of infectious diseases. This initiative aims to enhance the qualifications of Ukrainian medical professionals and improve the quality of healthcare.
  • Participation in the development of Unbroken projects: The JICA delegation visited the “Unbroken” Rehabilitation Center, the Prosthetics and Orthotics Center, and the social housing project. They also toured the Unbroken Rehabilitation Center in Bryukhovychi, where preparatory work for comprehensive reconstruction and development has begun. This allowed JICA representatives to assess the scale and needs of the center and identify potential areas of support.
  • Organization of business missions: Visits by Japanese companies to Ukraine to seek local business partners and explore investment opportunities in regional projects.

This meeting builds upon previous agreements. It is worth recalling that in May 2024, Hideki Matsunaga visited Lviv and met with Lviv City Mayor Andriy Sadovyy to discuss support for the development of the Unbroken ecosystem, which remains a key focus of collaboration.

JICA is already implementing large-scale projects in Ukraine worth over 150 billion yen, particularly in the areas of infrastructure restoration, community assistance, and technology development.

It is also important to note Lviv’s active cooperation with Japan: the city of Kobe is a sister city of Lviv, and renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban designed the innovative Unbroken Surgical Center project.

The collaboration between Lviv and JICA is a significant step in developing the medical rehabilitation and recovery system in Ukraine, helping thousands of Ukrainians remain “Unbroken.”
