Swedfund to allocate 4 million SEK for the construction of a new Unbroken surgical building in Lviv
16 Apr 2025

On April 14 in Stockholm, Lviv City Mayor, Andriy Sadovyy, and the CEO of the Swedish investment fund Swedfund, Maria Håkansson, signed a cooperation agreement. Swedfund will finance the preparation of a feasibility study for the construction of the new Unbroken surgical building. This is the first mandatory step that paves the way for attracting donors and investors within the framework of a public-private partnership, in accordance with Ukrainian legislation.

The Unbroken surgical building is an innovative project with no global analogues. The eight-story building (including two underground and six above-ground levels) will feature concrete cores and a wooden structure without metal joints inside. This approach ensures environmental sustainability, rapid assembly, and resistance to damage. The architectural design is by world-renowned Japanese architect Shigeru Ban. The uniqueness of the project lies in the combination of Ukrainian materials with Japanese technologies. The project is being adapted to Ukrainian building standards in partnership with a Ukrainian architectural and engineering company.

Swedfund is a state-owned financial institution of Sweden that has been investing in sustainable development in more than 60 countries since 1979.
